Lend your voice against hunger
Food insecurity and hunger continue to affect millions of Canadians.
Despite being a wealthy country, Canada’s food bank usage has increased by a staggering 90% over the last five years — forcing many families to make impossible choices, like choosing between food and rent.
In fact, nearly one in four of us now find it difficult to put food on the table each day. And alarmingly, over a third of total food bank users across the country are children.
Increasing poverty, broken social safety nets, rising living costs, and precarious employment all contribute to food insecurity's grip on too many people in Canada.
We need to move beyond raising awareness of Canada’s food insecurity crisis and work together toward meaningful and lasting solutions.
Together we can build a Canada where no one goes hungry.
Food Banks Canada is working on multiple fronts to address food insecurity across the country — and your support is crucial to all of it. While immediate relief is crucial for millions of people in Canada, we also know that long-term solutions are needed to tackle the root causes of poverty and hunger.
Food Banks Canada has been advocating for the following solutions:
- Better support for people when they need it. That means improving and indexing social safety nets to inflation — so that they keep up with the real cost of living.
- Address the housing crisis. That means a national rent assistance program and ensuring that the needs of people with disabilities are part of building affordable housing.
- Support low income workers. That means improving access and modernizing our antiquated Employment Insurance (EI) system.
- Prioritize Northern and remote food insecurity. That means addressing the high cost of living in the North, investing in economic development and improving job training and employment opportunities for our northern communities.
We’re calling on all political parties to commit to reducing food insecurity by 50% by 2030.
Food Banks Canada continues to advocate for these measures, and while there has been some progress — there is still more to be done to meaningfully reduce food insecurity. It’s essential that we work together to accelerate these efforts and ensure no one is left behind. We are committed to driving change — and we are counting on your support to help amplify these efforts so everyone in Canada has access to the food they need.
Let’s join together to keep working toward lasting solutions.
